Illustrations Of The Bizarre

The illustrations of Redmer Hoekstra are visual puns from the quite literal beehive hair to a rabbit being used for a bow tie this kind of whimsical illustration has always attracted my interest.

It seems at first to be a simple task of mixing two ideas together, but the problem lies in the fact that by mixing two ideas together you often lose the individual ideas clear symbolic forms which makes rendering a singular form that conveys both ideas a much greater task than drawing either idea separately.

Taking this illustration, for example, the shape of the rhino needs to be very clear to avoid it looking like a lumpy train, this kind of drawings that pin absurd thoughts to the page has always interested me.
